Duplicity NYT Critics' Pick
A waste of a film that relies on slickness and editing gimmicks to produce a less-than-satisfying experience, given its star power and budget. A.O. Scott may wax rhapsodic about the "womanliness" of Julia Roberts, but the scenes between her and Clive Owen play out to the same formula, with Roberts conveying not a bit of sexual tension. The corporate "war" is cliched, and Paul Giametti's over-the-top performance is interesting to watch but entirely without credibility. A thriller or a love story? It doesn't matter, since the film succeeds on neither count. Had Tony Gilroy probed the relationships more deeply instead of relying on tricks, he might have made a satisfying movie.
